Gaining and Sustaining Momentum by Andy Stanley

Decided to update my podcasts and was so happy to find out that there's now an Andy Stanley Leadership Podcast! Awesome!

Here's some notes on the first one I downloaded for the series called "Gaining and Sustaining Momentum":

3 Components of sustaining momentum:

1) "NEW"

-triggers momentum

-anything new by definition automatically generates some kind of momentum

-can be negative or positive

-organizational momentum is triggered by

----new leadership

----new direction

----new program/program

-Do we need a new leader? a new direction? a new program/product? or a combination?

-Momentum is never triggered by tweaking something old. It is triggered by introducing something new. Minor improvements to something that lacks momentum will not trigger momentum. It just makes something mediocre a little bit better.

-new does not guarantee sustained momentum, but it always triggers some kind of momentum.

"Momentum is like the wind--if we are not careful, we can kill it and never know that we have."

"There are seasons of momentum; nothing lasts forever."

Three questions to continually ask:

1) What can we do that's new that would trigger it?

2) Is the new a significant improvement over the old?

3) What can we do to continually tweak the new so that it continues to gain and sustain momentum

Visioneering

1. A vision begins as a concern.
2. A vision does not necessarily require immediate action.
3. Pray for opportunities and plan as if you expect God to answer your prayers.
4. God is using your circumstances to position and prepare you to accomplish his vision for your life.
5. What God originates, he orchestrates.
6. Walk before you talk: investigate before you initiate.
7. Communicate your vision as a solution to a problem that must be addressed immediately.
8. Cast your vision to the appropriate people at the appropriate time.
9. Don't expect others to take greater risks or make greater sacrifices than you have.
10. Don't conuse your plans with God's vision.
11. Visions are refined - they don't change; plans are revised - they rarely stay the same.
12. Respond to criticism with prayer, remembrance, and if necessary, a revision of the plan.
13. Visions thrive in an environment of unity; they die in an environment of division.
14. Abandon the vision before you abandon your moral authority.
15. Don't get distracted.
16. There is a divine potential in all you envision to do.
17. The end of a God-ordained vision is God.
18. Maintaining a vision requires adherence to a set of core beliefs and behaviors.
19. Visions require constant attention.
20. Maintaining a vision requires bold leadership.
